On the same day that President Donald Trump announced his controversial decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, 58 members of the House of Representatives voted in favor of impeaching him.

The impeachment articles were brought forward by Democratic Congressman Al Green of Texas, but Republican House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California motioned to table the impeachment resolution. The vote to table the measure passed by a vote of 364-58. The 58 lawmakers who supported advancing the impeachment articles were all Democrats, and four Democrats simply voted “present.”

“Donald John Trump, by causing such harm to the society of the United States is unfit to be president and warrants impeachment, trial and removal from office,” Green said.

Green’s impeachment articles portrayed Trump as associating with bigotry and inciting hate and hostility. Green referenced Trump’s description of the white supremacists who marched in the violent Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, VA as “very fine people,” and noted Trump’s decision to retweet misleading Islamophobic videos from a far-right fringe party activist in the UK.

Green, a seven-term lawmaker from the Houston area, also referred to the president’s spat with Democratic Congresswoman Frederica Wilson over his treatment of a gold star widow.

The matter was sidelined by an overwhelming vote of both Democrats and Republicans, including Democratic leadership.

“Now is not the time to consider articles of impeachment,” Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and Minority Whip Steny Hoyer said in a joint statement, according to Politico. Pelosi and Hoyer instead emphasized the importance of opposing the GOP tax bill.
